Open weights are only the beginning: a model license checklist
A downloadable checkpoint answers one question. Before using or distributing it, check the exact release, its terms and the provenance of any derivative.

- Check the exact model revision, not only its family name.
- Keep licensing, behavior and privacy assessments separate.
- Document missing or conflicting provenance before deployment.
A download is not the whole specification
A model repository can make it easy to obtain a checkpoint while leaving other questions unresolved. What are you allowed to do with it? Which release do the terms cover? Has a community conversion changed the model or only its storage format? Those questions deserve separate answers before a download becomes part of a product.
The Open Source Initiative’s definition addresses more than access to parameters. Its framework considers freedoms to use, study, modify and share, alongside the information and code needed to make meaningful modifications. That is a different inquiry from whether a model responds to a particular prompt.
Record the exact artifact
A useful review starts with a small record: repository owner, model name, revision, file name, base-model identity and the location of the license. Save those references with the deployment configuration. A family name alone is too broad when several variants or derivatives are available.
For a converted or fine-tuned release, inspect both the distributor’s description and the base model’s documentation. If their accounts differ or key information is missing, treat that as an unresolved question rather than filling the gap from a similarly named model.
Separate permission from performance
A license review does not establish answer quality, refusal behavior, privacy or deployment security. Conversely, an impressive demonstration does not tell you which conditions apply to redistribution. Keeping separate notes for these questions prevents evidence about one property from being mistaken for evidence about another.
This is an organizational checklist, not a legal interpretation of a particular license. For a consequential use, read the complete terms for the exact artifact and obtain appropriate advice when their application is unclear. The practical goal is a decision you can later explain: what was reviewed, which version it concerned, and what remained uncertain.
